Reflections from a man and his dog
I have a black Labrador named Bella. She’s 18 months old, full of energy, mischief, and love. She doesn't speak in words, but I’ve come to realize that she doesn’t need to. If I listen closely, I hear her spirit loud and clear.
The other day, I found myself wondering…
If Bella could talk, what would she tell me about life?
What would she want me to remember on the hard days? The quiet days? The busy ones when I forget to breathe.
Here’s what I imagine she’d say, her version of ten life lessons, barked softly into my soul:
1. Love without Conditions
“Whether you’re grumpy, tired, joyful or distracted, I love you anyway. That’s how you should love too.”
2. Be Present, Not Perfect
“When we sit together, you’re my whole world. You don’t need to fix everything. Just be there.”
3. Trust Your Senses
“I sense things you can’t see. So do you, if you’d only listen to your gut more. It’s wiser than you think.”
4. Forgive Fast, Play Often
“I don’t hold grudges. Especially if there’s a walk or a ball waiting. Let go. Run free.”
5. Loyalty is a Daily Choice
“I choose you every single day. Without question. Loyalty is not about big gestures. It’s about showing up.”
6. Be Curious — Sniff More
“Life isn’t just for rushing through. Sniff things. Explore. Take in the details. They matter.”
7. Rest Without Guilt
“When I nap, I don’t wonder if I’m lazy. Rest is noble. It helps you dream bigger and run farther.”
8. Guard What Matters, But Don’t Bark at Everything
“I know when to protect, and when to keep quiet. You don’t need to fight every battle. Choose what’s worth it.”
9. Find Joy in the Ordinary
“A stick. A walk. A familiar voice. That’s joy. Don’t overlook the little things. They’re the best part.”
10. Sometimes, Just Sit Close
“I may not fix your sadness. But I can sit beside you, put my head on your lap, and remind you: you’re not alone.”
Bella can’t speak. But maybe she doesn’t need to. She teaches me, quietly, every day, in the wag of her tail, the way she lies next to me when I feel low, and the way she runs headlong into the wind like the world was made just for her.
Maybe we don’t need more podcasts, more books, or more philosophies.
Maybe all we need is a dog… and the humility to listen.
Written from the heart. Inspired by Bella. For anyone who’s ever been loved by a dog.
